Along San Pablo Avenue, you face the crossroads of historical plaques, university housing, immigrant enclaves, and, increasingly, new upscale locales and trendy eats. It is a landscape imbued with the tensions of race, displacement, capital, labor, and power. Old businesses, residents, and “memories make way for condos + office space”, as is written on the side of the Missouri Lounge in Berkeley. But along San Pablo, there are also reminders of continued community survival and belonging, and this collection seeks to attend to those just as much.
